THOMAS M. BRACKEN,
94, one of Guernsey County�s three surviving veterans of the Civil War,
died Sunday morning at 8:50 o�clock at his home in Cumberland following
a lingering illness of infirmities incident to advanced age. Dr. Francis
M. Shriver, father of Mrs. A. W. Boyd, North Seventh Street, and Joseph
Kenworthy, near Hopewell, are the sole survivors of the conflict between
the Union and Confederacy residing in Guernsey County. Benjamin
Nicholson, another veteran, died several weeks ago at the age of 92. Mr.
Bracken was born in Pennsylvania, son of T. T. and MARIE BRACKEN, and
accompanied them to Guernsey County when he was eight years of age,
locating at Cumberland, where he grew to manhood. Following the death of
his parents he went to Pennsylvania, where he resided until 25 years ago
when he returned to his former home in Cumberland. Several years of
active service in the Civil War was seen by Mr. Bracken and he engaged
in numerous major battles. He enlisted in the Union Army at the famous
Brown Hotel in Cambridge, becoming a member of Company F, 9th Ohio
Volunteer Cavalry. Hs company became a part of the forces of General
Sherman and he made the historic march to the sea under the command of
this great general. Possibly the last battle of the war was engaged in
by Mr. Bracken, a skirmish with Confederate troops in North Carolina
which attempted to stop the advance of the Yankees into the south. He
was not wounded and emerged from the civil strife in excellent health.
His two brothers, WILLIAM and JOHN BRACKEN, were killed in action.
Following the war he moved to Toronto, O., where he was a rural mail
carrier for many years. Following his retirement from the postal service
he returned to Cumberland and had made his home there since. The
deceased was a member of the Toronto I.O.O.F. Lodge for over 70 years
and was a member of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church. MISS JUNETTA,
Cumberland, became the wife of Mr. Bracken when he was a young man, but
she died a short time after their marriage. He later married BELLE
MILLER, Canonsburg, PA., who is also deceased. Twenty-seven years ago he
married MARY LUTZ, Cumberland. She died eight years ago. No children
were born to these unions. Surviving are a brother, THOMPSON BRACKEN,
Oklahoma, and a number of nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be
conducted Monday evening at 7:30 o�clock at the Earl R. Tom funeral
home, Cumberland. Tuesday morning the body will be taken to the Paisley
Funeral Home, Toronto, for additional services with I.O.O.F. members in
charge. Interment will be made in Toronto Cemetery. (Note - Photograph

MRS. THOMAS BRACKEN - MRS. BELLE BRACKEN, wife of
THOMAS BRACKEN, died at 3 o�clock Thursday morning at her home in
Toronto, O., where she had lived for some years. Mrs. Bracken�s maiden
name was Miller, and she was a daughter of HENRY MILLER, formerly a
well-known resident of Canonsburg; where the deceased lived until her
marriage. She was prominently identified with the United Presbyterian
Church of Toronto. She is survived by her husband and by two brothers,
JOHN J. and ALEXANDER MILLER, both of Canonsburg. She was aged 55 years.
Funeral services will be held Saturday at 10 o�clock, from her late
home. The interment will be at Toronto.

107 Mourn Death of Retired Miner
William Alexander Briggs, 84, paternal head of a family of 107 children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, a retired coal miner, passed away in the Martins Ferry Hospital Sunday at 3 pm following an illness of one month. He was in the hospital for the large part of the time.
Besides his wife, Mrs. Mary Jane Steed Briggs, to whom he was married June 3, 1866, in West Alexander, he leaves eight children: Mrs. Alex Defibaugh, Ben and Charles, all of Martins Ferry, William E. Briggs of Unionport, Ohio, John, George and Mrs. Henry Cusick of Tiltonsville, and Harry J. Briggs of Adena, 46 grandchildren and 53 great-grandchildren. He was the last of a family of 14 children.
Deceased was born September 12, 1846 in Marshall Co. W. Va., a son of the late Benjamin & Sarah Gary Briggs. He became affiliated with the Methodist Episcopal Church when quite young. Moving to Tiltonsville in 1892 he became engage in mining being last employed in the O. & P. mine in Yorkville. He retired 24 years ago.

Edgar I. Brindley, 84, a native of Rush Run, died Friday. He was a retired employee from the Pennsylvania Railroad in Mingo Junction. He was a member of the Rush Run Methodist Church. His wife Victoria, preceeded him in death in 1944. He leaves a daughter, Mrs. Audrey Chavis of Weirton; a sister, Mrs. Pearl Oxley of Akron and a grandchild, Eugene Brindley of Weirton. Friends may call at the Orval J. Williams Funeral Home in Brilliant tonight after 7. The body will be removed to the Rush Run Methodist Church, services at 2 pm; the Rev. Mr. Edwin Finlinson; Hopewell Cemetery.

Mrs. Claire L. Bucy, 76, of 2321 Sunset Blvd., died at 1:45 a.m. today in Ohio
Valley Hospital.
She was admitted to the hospital May 31 after an extended illness.
Mrs. Buy, widow of Ingram Buy, was a charter member of the Daughters of Union
Veterans, and Grand Army of the Republic and the Sunset Club.
She also was a member of the Protective Home Circle of the Royal Neighbors of
America and the Service Star Legion. Mrs. Bucy was a member of the LaBelle
View Church of Christ.
The daughter of the late George W. and Anna Dunbar Simmons, she was born May
3, 1879, in Steubenville.
She is survived by a son, George A. Bucy of Richmond; one daughter, Mrs.
Howard T. Weaver of Steubenville; a sister, Mrs. Hilda Newburn, of
Steubenville; two brothers, Robert C. Simmons of Wintersville, and Edgar G.
Simmons of RD 2, Carrollton; eight grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren.
Her husband preceded her in death in 1944.
Friends will be received at the Burford - Cole Brothers Funeral Home after 12
noon Saturday.
The Reverend Alva Sizemore will conduct services at the funeral home Monday
at 1 p.m. Burial will be in Union Cemetery.
Clara Lavada Simmons Bucy was my Gr. Grandmother. This obituary appeared in
the Steubenville Herald Star on June 3, 1955. Interment took place June 6,
1955.

Ingram D. Bucy, 72, of 2321 Sunset Boulevard, died at 2:45 p.m. Sunday at the
Ohio Valley Hospital.
He was born in this city, a son of William and Margaret McGrew Bucy and had
spent his entire life here. He was a painter by trade and a member of the
LaBelle View Church of Christ and well and favorably known.
He was married to Clara Lavada Simmons who survives with two children, Mrs.
Howard Weaver, Steubenville and George A. Bucy of Richmond, Ohio. Also eight
grandchildren and one great grandson.
Friends may call at the home of the daughter, Mrs. Howard Weaver, 121 Welday
Avenue.
